The valiant Rotherham United supporters who walked all the way to Field Mill would have been well pleased as they watched their team record another winning double.
It was a game of high importance for the Stags who were battling to avoid relegation from League Two and the game was played at a high tempo.
The Millers were first on to the attack with a good break from Tom Cahill but his shot was blocked before a Peter Holomes free kick found Pablo Mills whose cross brought no reward.
Then another free kick just outside the penalty area saw Holmes and Mills combine again but nothing came of it before Town had a good chance on 13 minutes but Andy Warrington made a fine save from a Boulding shot and the second attempt was turned away for a corner.
Then on 18 minutes the Millers had a good chance to open the scoring when a good break saw Cahill with a chance but his effort was blocked by the keeper and the ball was cleared.
Then he had a shot blocked before a Town free kick saw Hamshaw find Boulding whose shot was blocked but back came United for Holmes to fire a good effort from 20 yards only just wide.
A Marc Joseph free kick was caught by the keeper but the home side ended the first half pushing forward strongly and Boulding hit a 25 yarder wide before Arnold had a shot saved.
Hamshaw drove an effort well over the bar and the first half came to an end with a great tackle from Graham Coughlan stopping Boulding.
The Stags were soon on the attack at the start of the second period and Louis was halted in his tracks while Warrington got down to save a 20 yarder from Boulding.
A Hamshaw free kick was cleared and Arnold fired wide from 22 yards and when the Millers responded Holmes saw his 25 yards free kick come to nothing.
Then a good Rotherham move won a corner and a fine link up saw Jamie Yates and Derek Holmes set up a chance for Tonge but he drove his 20 yarder over the bar.
But on 71 minutes the Millers took the lead with a freak goal from Yates who was almost on the touchline 40 yards out when he launched the ball towards the goal and saw it go over the keeper into the net in front of the delighted Rotherham fans.
Almost immediately matters could have been level again when Arnold set up a great chance for Boulding who wasted the opening by firing over the bar.
No one got on the end of a telling Hamshaw free kick when then crossed low for Boulding to head wide but the Millers defence was in superb form as they repelled everything the home team could throw at them.
On 85 minutes Peter Holmes had a 20 yarder deflected for a corner and from a break he found Hudson whose shot was turned out for another corner.
In the second minute of added time the Millers should have added a second goal when a break saw Hudson swap passes with Yates to leave him with an easy chance but somehow from just a few yards he put the ball over an unguarded net.
Then unbelievably they wasted another chance with a break as all the Mansfield players including the keeper were in the Rotherham half but Tonge wasted the chance when he lost the ball.
