After a week that had seen the club go into administration, it was back to action on the field for the visit of near Yorkshire neighbours on a bitterly cold day with an unchanged home line up.
An early home free kick brought no reward before Marc Joseph linked with Peter Holmes who delivered a cross that was caught by the keeper.
United were playing against a strong wind but they won a ninth minute corner from which Pablo Mills headed over the bar and Mark Hudson had a shot saved.
A couple of City free kicks came to nothing and back came the Millers with a good move that won a corner that was played back in by Mills for Chris O'Grady to shoot wide.
Then on 18 minutes the Millers should have been awarded a penalty when Peter Holmes was knocked over as he was set to convert a Jamie Yates cross but the referee waved play on.
Hudson and Peter Holmes linked well to win two corners in quick succession while Johnson hit a Bradford free kick well over the bar.
Back came United again with a good break from O'Grady who sent Yates away but after outpacing the defender he hit his shot into the side netting.
A City corner brought no reward and Daley had a shot saved by Andy Warrington before O'Grady had the ball in the net but he was ruled offside before the players had to endure a hailstorm.
Just before the interval Hudson hit a 25 yarder just wide and the second half was only three minutes old when City took the lead with Colbeck scoring with a shot off the inside of the post.
That spurred the Millers into more attacking and O'Grady had a shot saved before City should have added another goal on 63 minutes when Nix had what looked an easy chance only for Warrington to save the ball on the line.
That was to prove fatal for City as United levelled matters two minutes later when O'Grady nipped in behind Bower to score from close range from a deep Joseph free kick.
City were reduced to ten men on 70 minutes when Daley was shown the red card for kicking out wildly at Coughlan off the ball and that saw the Millers enjoy the vast majority of the possession as they looked for a winner.
Coughlan almost got on the end of an O'Grady cross and Joseph hit an effort just over the bar. Peter Holmes had a free kick caught by the keeper and substitute Marc Newsham had a header saved and deep into added time Hudson was only just wide with a volley.
