(Town won 4-2 on penalties)

After being in front at half time when they looked much the better side, Rotherham United were pegged back before they were beaten in a penalty shoot out to bow out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy in the second round.

Five team changes were made with Jamie Annerson making his debut in goal but it was Grimsby who made the first attack winning a fourth minute corner that was dealt with by the home defence.

As the Millers replied Marc Newsham had a shot saved and on seven minutes Chris O'Grady had a shot deflected for a corner after Ryan Cresswell had headed on a Jamie Yates free kick.

Yates then saw his 25 yarder turned round the post for a corner while Marcus Bean also saw his effort touched out for a flag kick.

The home pressure paid off in the 19th minute when Newsham laid the ball back to O'Grady who scored with a fine shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Two Town corners were dealt with by the home defence before the Mariners defence did well to stop a fine link up between Newsham and O'Grady.

Peter Holmes fired just wide from 25 yards but on 37 minutes he had a great chance to put the Millers two up.

Newsham and O'Grady combined superbly to set up the chance but with only the keeper to beat the midfielder agonisingly pulled his shot just wide.

Newsham then was just wide at the near post after well yet again with O'Grady and the Millers went into half time well on top.

But that situation soon changed after the interval with Town storming on to the attack to win an early free kick that was driven into the defensive wall.

Taylor went past Cresswell to deliver a low cross from which Tonge did well to put the ball out for a corner. Rotherham replied with a corner when Holmes' shot was deflected just wide but it was Town who made the most of it as they broke away in fine style to grab an equaliser with Till finishing off the quick move with a fine shot.

Toner then drove an effort over the Rotherham bar before Yates had a shot deflected for a corner from which a Danny Harrison effort was turned out for another flag kick.

But from the hour mark it was the visitors who started to take control and Toner saw a shot turned round the post by Annerson before Fenton headed over the bar and yet another Toner shot was saved.

In the 90th minute Toner again went close from 25 yards but with the game locked at stalemate at the end on normal time, it went to a penalty shootout.

Toner saw the first kick superbly saved by Annerson but then Newsham hit the post. Newey scored for Town and Harrison did the same for the Millers but Grimsby went in front when Boshell scored before Derek Holmes missed.

Taylor netted his kick as did Steve Brogan but the Mariners clinched their win with Till making no mistake.
